Deck mud bags come from bed volume and product yield

Bags = ceiling((area × average thickness × layers × (1 + waste)) ÷ yield per bag)

  • For imperial inputs, convert thickness from inches to feet before multiplying by square feet.
  • Use average thickness when the mortar bed is sloped or the substrate is uneven.
  • The starting 0.41 cu ft per 50 lb bag is a product-specific QUIKRETE example, not a universal yield.
  • Confirm allowable thickness, mixing water, substrate preparation, reinforcement, slope, drainage, and curing in the selected system documentation.

For one bag, area coverage = yield × 12 ÷ thickness in inches. At 1 inch, 0.41 cu ft covers about 4.92 sq ft before allowance; at 2 inches it covers about 2.46 sq ft. A published 0.62 cu ft yield for the 75 lb version gives different results. Bag weight alone is not a yield conversion.

Check the manufacturer product data. Thickness, substrate, bonding, reinforcement, slope and waterproofing are system decisions. For separate mortar layers with different thicknesses, calculate each layer separately. Do not add waste again to these table counts.

01How do I calculate deck mud from square feet?+

Select Imperial and Known area, enter the square feet in Known surface area, then enter average bed thickness in inches. Convert thickness to feet before multiplying: 20 sq ft at 1.5 inches is 20 × 1.5 ÷ 12 = 2.5 cu ft for one layer. With 10% waste and a product yield of 0.41 cu ft per bag, buy 7 whole bags. Square feet alone cannot determine bag count.

02Can I use this as a floor mud calculator?+

Yes, for a specified mortar-bed product with a known volume yield. Enter the floor area, average thickness and any separate full-area layers. This estimates material quantity; it does not design a floor screed, shower slope or waterproofing assembly.

03How many bags of deck mud do I need?+

Multiply surface area by average bed thickness and the number of full-area layers, add a waste allowance, divide by the exact product yield per bag, and round up to full bags.

04Can I use this as a shower pan mortar calculator?+

Yes, when the selected shower-pan system uses a deck-mud or mortar-bed product and you know the measured area, average bed thickness, number of layers, and product yield. Slope, drain details, waterproofing, minimum thickness, bonding, and reinforcement still have to follow the specified shower system.

05Is deck mud the same as dry-pack mortar?+

Deck mud and dry-pack mortar are commonly used names for low-water mortar-bed mixes, but formulations and approved uses vary. For bag-count estimates, enter the published volume yield of the exact product instead of assuming every dry-pack or shower-pan mortar has the same yield.

06How many square feet does a bag of deck mud cover?+

Coverage depends on the bag's published volume yield and the bed thickness. A bag covers twice as much area at 1 inch as it does at 2 inches, so use the exact product yield and your average thickness.

07Why does the calculator use average thickness?+

Sloped shower pans and uneven mortar beds do not have one uniform thickness. An average thickness converts the measured area into a transparent planning volume; verify it from the actual layout and required system details.

08Is the 0.41 cubic foot default universal?+

No. It is the published yield for a 50 lb QUIKRETE Deck Mud bag. Replace it with the yield on the exact product data sheet or package you plan to use.

09Does this calculate the sand-to-cement mix ratio?+

No. It estimates the volume and bag count of a selected product. Mix proportions, water, reinforcement, bonding, slope, drainage, and substrate preparation must follow the specified installation system and product instructions.

10Can I use deck mud over any floor?+

No. Substrate preparation, bonding or cleavage membranes, reinforcement, thickness limits, and curing requirements vary by system. Confirm the complete assembly before purchasing or installing material.
