The calculation

Grout quantity follows joint volume and product density

kg/m² = ((tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width)) × joint width × filled depth × grout density

  • Geometry inputs use millimetres internally and density in kilograms per litre.
  • Product-coverage mode bypasses density and uses the selected package chart.
  • Tile roughness, irregular joints, cleanup loss, and surface flatness can change actual consumption.
  • Adhesive coverage should match the product, trowel, tile, substrate, and transfer requirement.

Metric grout example: enter centimetres, not millimetres

Geometry mode makes the assumptions visible. Here, 20 m² of 300 × 300 mm tile has a 3 mm joint and an 8 mm filled depth, using an illustrative density of 1.6 kg/L.

Entering 3 in the metric joint-width field means 3 cm (30 mm), not 3 mm. Confirm every displayed input unit before copying measurements from a product chart.

The density is an example, not a default suitable for every cementitious, epoxy or premixed grout. If the exact product chart gives coverage for your tile and joint, use product-coverage mode instead.

In product-coverage mode, 100 sq ft at 60 sq ft per package with a selected 10% allowance needs ceiling(110 ÷ 60) = 2 packages. That illustrative coverage must be replaced with your actual product data. Adhesive is a separate optional estimate.

01Which units do I enter for metric grout joints?+

Metric tile and joint dimensions are entered in centimeters: a 300 mm tile is 30 cm, a 3 mm joint is 0.3 cm, and an 8 mm filled depth is 0.8 cm. Area is in square meters and grout package weight is in kilograms. Check the units shown beside each input.

02How much grout do I need?+

Use either the exact product coverage chart or estimate grout volume from tile length, tile width, joint width, filled joint depth, area, and grout density. Add waste and round up to full packages.

03Why do tile size and grout joint width affect grout quantity?+

Smaller tiles create more joint length per square foot, and wider or deeper joints create more volume to fill. Both changes increase grout consumption.

04Should I use grout density or product coverage mode?+

Product coverage mode is preferable when the exact package chart is available. Geometry mode is useful for transparent planning, but the density value must match the selected grout.

05How deep should grout fill the joint?+

Use the actual filled joint depth required by the grout and tile system. Do not assume every joint is filled to the full tile thickness; follow the product and installation guidance.
