Brick Calculator

Find how many full-size facing bricks to purchase for a measured wall. Set the actual brick face, joint, openings, waste, supplier packs and optional mortar yield instead of guessing.

Enter measurements below. Results update as you type, and optional prices can be added before sharing the estimate.

The calculation

Bricks = net wall area ÷ installed face of one brick

Bricks before waste = (wall length × wall height − openings) ÷ ((brick face length + joint) × (brick face height + joint))

  • For a single wall face, use the dimensions of the exposed brick face and include the joint thickness in both directions.
  • Nominal modular brick sizes can differ from real brick dimensions; the default actual US face is 7⅝ by 2¼ inches.
  • Round up the net estimate after adding cut/breakage allowance; when buying full packs, round those separately.
  • Mortar depends on actual product yield and construction; enter your bag coverage rather than relying on a universal default.
  • Multiple wythes, patterns requiring unusual cuts, structural reinforcement, footings and corners need a more detailed design/takeoff.

Quick examples

10 ft × 8 ft wall, no openings80 sq ft gross wall area
7⅝ × 2¼ in brick plus ⅜ in joints8 × 2⅝ in installed face = 21 sq in
Base wall count549 bricks before allowance (rounded up)
10% allowance604 bricks (rounded whole units)

Examples are planning checks. Product-label coverage and whole pack sizes control the final purchase quantity.

Common questions

Understand the result before purchasing

01How many bricks do I need per square foot?+

The number depends on the actual exposed brick face and joint dimensions. A 7⅝ × 2¼ inch modular brick with ⅜ inch mortar joints covers 8 × 2⅝ inches, or approximately 6.86 bricks per square foot before waste.

02How do I calculate bricks for a wall with a door or window?+

Calculate the wall face area, deduct door and window openings, then divide the remaining area by one installed brick face including the mortar joint. Apply breakage allowance before rounding up.

03Can I calculate metric bricks?+

Yes. Switch to Meters & cm and enter your supplier's actual brick face length and height plus the joint width in centimeters. The results still show square feet and square meters.

04How much extra brick should I order?+

The extra allowance depends on cutting, corners, bond, wastage and possible future repairs. Choose a waste percentage that suits your plan; the tool shows full whole units and optional packs.

05Does the brick calculator estimate mortar?+

Yes, if you enter the number of bricks laid by one bag of your specific mortar product. Mortar demand varies with brick type, joint size, laying method and product; the calculator does not assume a universal yield.

06Can this tool calculate all bricks for a structural wall?+

It estimates one exposed wall face, not structural wythes, reinforced cores, engineering, backing systems, returns, corners or detailed bonding/cutting patterns. A double-wythe wall needs a separately validated takeoff.

07How do I use the estimate with a supplier?+

Print or copy the material summary, then confirm brick dimensions, bricks per pack/pallet, mortar yield, prices, delivery minimums and applicable building requirements.
