Landscape fabric calculation breakdown

Strip layout

Roll width minus overlap determines how many parallel fabric strips cover the project.

Roll quantity

Whole continuous strips must fit on each roll. Purchase count is the larger of layout rolls and the pooled length with waste.

Staple lines

Project perimeter and fabric seams are divided by the selected staple spacing.

Purchase packs

Staples are rounded up to full retail packs.

The calculation

Fabric rolls = larger of whole-strip layout and length-with-waste counts

Strips cover the project width using roll width − overlap; staple lines use perimeter + seams

  • Whole strips must fit on physical rolls. Five 60 ft strips require five 100 ft rolls, even though their pooled length is only 300 ft. This estimate excludes end-to-end splices; rotate dimensions to compare another strip direction.
  • Project dimensions produce a more reliable strip layout than area alone.
  • Overlap must be smaller than the fabric roll width.
  • Staple spacing should follow the fabric manufacturer and site conditions.
  • Both fabric and staple quantities round up to full retail packages.

The calculator estimates staples along the project perimeter and fabric seams using the selected spacing, then adds a small corner allowance and rounds to full packs.

05Does soil type change staple spacing?+

It can. Soft soil, slopes, wind exposure, loose edges, and product instructions may require closer spacing or a different staple length. Keep the spacing input editable.

06Can I use known-area mode?+

Yes, but known-area mode approximates the project as a square to estimate perimeter and strip layout. Length-and-width mode is more accurate.

07Can I include fabric and staple cost?+
