Use a seam takeoff for a known board layout. This example includes a separate wall-to-ceiling joint entry, so those same joints must not also be counted under flat seams.

The same drywall area can have different seam lengths with different sheet sizes, orientation and room shapes. Area mode is a planning rate, not an exact board-layout takeoff.
Do not count each side of a shared seam separately, and count an inside corner once along its length. Outside corners using a separate bead system are not ordinary tape runs.
A ceiling perimeter of 40 ft is only an example of joints actually being taped. Do not automatically add every room perimeter when a detail calls for a different treatment. Read the roll length on the package; joint compound is estimated separately.

Common questions
Count a shared joint once along its length. If wall-to-ceiling joints are entered in the ceiling field, exclude them from flat seams and inside corners. An area-based fallback cannot reproduce every board layout, so use measured seams when available.
Add the lengths of flat joints, inside corners, and any wall-to-ceiling joints that will be taped. Add a small allowance for cuts and damage, then divide by the tape length per roll.
