Crown Molding Calculator

Estimate crown molding linear feet, waste, full stock pieces, purchased length, and optional local cost.

Enter measurements below. Results update as you type, and optional prices can be added before sharing the estimate.

The calculation

Crown molding = net wall run plus waste

Stock pieces = ceiling(((measured run + additions − skips) × (1 + waste)) ÷ stock length)

  • Rectangular room mode uses two lengths plus two widths.
  • Doors and windows are not automatically deducted because crown usually follows the ceiling line.
  • Waste should reflect corners, scarf joints, pattern repeat, defects, and offcuts.
  • This is a material estimate, not a crown-angle or saw-setting calculator.

Common questions

Understand the result before purchasing

01How much crown molding do I need?+

Add the molding runs around the room, include bays or returns, subtract sections intentionally left open, add an allowance for cuts and pattern matching, then round up to full stock lengths.

02How do I calculate crown molding for a rectangular room?+

Add two room lengths and two room widths to get the perimeter. The calculator can then add extra runs, subtract skipped sections, apply waste, and round the result to full stock pieces.

03How much extra crown molding should I buy?+

Waste depends on room shape, inside and outside corners, coped or mitered joints, scarf joints, pattern repeat, stock defects, and installer experience. Use a visible allowance appropriate to the actual room and product.

04Does this calculate crown molding angles?+

No. This page estimates material quantity. Crown spring angle, wall-corner angle, saw orientation, coping, and compound-miter settings must be confirmed separately on the actual room.

05Can I deduct doors or windows?+

Crown molding normally follows the wall-to-ceiling line, so ordinary doors and windows are not deducted. Use skipped sections only where crown molding will intentionally stop.

06Can I include crown molding cost?+

Yes. Enter a local price per full stock piece and the calculator applies it to the rounded purchase quantity.
